WHAT IS A DIE CUT?

A Die Cut means that the label has been cut using a “cookie cutter” to create the size or shape that is required. This method makes it easier for us to create unique sizes or shapes upon request. If we do not have the die required you will need to pay a one-off cost for us to make it. This cost will not affect future orders of the same shape or size. Die Cutting labels makes is easier to peel them away from the backing paper.

WHICH PRINTER SHOULD I BUY?

The printer you need depends not only on the type of label you are printing on (direct or thermal) but also on the core size, amount of labels printing per day, label size and placement of printer (ie. desktop, industrial or mobile).

The Zebra Desktop range are suited for core sizes of 25mm and lower, with the base models, GC420, suited to printing around 500 Labels per day.

Mobile Printers will not fit a core larger than 19mm.

The Zebra ZT Range or Toshiba range are a more industrial type printer and are great for heavy usage like 500+ labels per day. These printers require a 76mm Core.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THERMAL TRANSFER AND THERMAL DIRECT?

A direct thermal printer uses its printhead to heat special, chemically treated, label stock. The print is created when parts of the label stock darken in response to the heat. Direct thermal printing is an inexpensive way to print labels that are for temporary use. For labels that need to last longer than 6 months, a thermal transfer printer will work better. Advantages of direct thermal are that it does not require ink or ribbon and they are less expensive. Disadvantages are that they can labels yellow or fade over time, labels susceptible to damage by water, strong sunlight, or other harsh conditions, printhead may wear out faster due friction of direct contact with printed material, not capable of printing fine barcodes, small text, or high-quality images and can only print black on white.

Thermal transfer printers use heat to bond a thin film of wax or resin coating onto a label. These printers can also print direct thermal labels, but the printhead may wear out faster. Advantages of thermal transfer include highest quality print, long lasting labels, large selection of label stocks including labels resistant to many harsh conditions (heat, sunlight, water, acids), many different colour ribbons and labels stocks available. Disadvantages are that thermal transfer requires ribbon and require a slightly more expensive printer.

For more information please contact us on 03 8369 9777 or email us at customerservice@austab.com.au

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY LABELS ARE THERMAL DIRECT OR THERMAL TRANSFER?

A simple test is to light a match and hold it near the label, close enough to discolour but not burn, a lit light bulb should work the same. If the label turns black from the heat, it is Thermal Direct, if not, it is Thermal Transfer.
You can also scratch the labels, if the scratch produces a black mark it is thermal direct.
